- Suggested herb and spice pairings that can be used as a salt substitute. In general, combine three herbs or less with a dish, beginning with 1/4 teaspoon, and adjusting to making one herb the dominant flavor.
- Beef: Basil, thyme, sage, nutmeg, dry mustard, marjoram
- Lamb: Mint, rosemary, dill seed, sage, marjoram, garlic
- Veal: Ginger, curry, basil, garlic, bay leaf, onion
- Pork: Caraway seed, chives, rosemary, marjoram, basil
- Chicken: Parsley, thyme, paprika, sage
- Fish: Curry, Bay leaf, lemon, dry mustard, paprika
- Carrots: Cloves, nutmeg, lemon peel, ginger, cinnamon, chives
- Squash: Ginger, mace, allspice, basil, cloves
- White potatoes: Mint, paprika, thyme, marjoram, parsley
- Tomatoes: Basil, oregano, curry powder, Bay leaf, onion
- Green beans: Nutmeg, basil, dill seed, marjoram, onion
